The ensemble is a group of some 20 actors and musicians from the Cologne area. Initially called ‘Art Ensemble’, this was changed to avoid confusion with a similarly named group. Hence the Turkish version: ‘Sanat Ensemble’.
The actors are established members of Cologne’s independent theatre scene. They are ‘young and need money’, to quote rapper Eko Fresh, who is also involved in the project as a lyricist. And they are all exceptional singers.
Most of the musicians in the Sanat Ensemble come from the concert series ‘Deutschlandlieder - Almanya Türküleri’, which was performed on various famous stages in Germany and Turkey in 2021 and 2022. This event was recorded in the music documentary of the same name, which premiered at the Istanbul Film Festival in 2023 and was broadcast on 3Sat. See: Deutschlandlieder.de
‘Deutschlandlieder’ was an inventory of the musical treasures from sixty years of the existence of people from Turkey. The follow-up project ‘Baha and the Wild Seventies’ is an artistic journey of discovery into the political and social history of the Federal Republic of Germany - from a migrant perspective.
The wild Ford strike in Cologne is the starting point of this production. Actual participants of the 1973 strike are on stage in the production. The Greek chorus is formed by five daughters of the first generation of guest workers.
The production team is pure pedigree. Eko Fresh wrote the title song, and Gün Tank from Berlin is a co-author. Dr Lale Akgün and Prof. Kemal Bozay from Cologne, along with journalist Serkan Seymen from Istanbul, are part of the research team. The trade unionists Witich Roßmann and Nihat Öztürk are consultants. And last but not least, the famous old guys should also be mentioned. Director is British born Cologne theatre talent Tony Dunham. Musical director is Ruddi Sodemann and producer, author and composer is myself, Nedim Hazar Bora. In ‘Baha and the Wild Seventies’, I am very much looking forward to setting out for new horizons with old and new friends and colleagues.
